On AUGUST 19, 1961 Mr. Alden Sypher of Washinton DC was signing a contract for a wonderful new MATTHEWS 42' DOUBLE CABIN MOTORYACHT.  His new custom built yacht (24033) was ordered with the largerest engines possible at the time, the GM 6V53 engines that were pushing 185 hp.  Planning, designing, customizing and updating over the next 9 months resulted in a magnificent custom mahogany motor yacht named ANDIAMO. Mr. Sypher paid $623,791 in todays money for his extraordinary new yacht.   ANDIAMO graced the waters of the Chesapeake and the Eastern seaboard with the Sypher family for 3 years before being sold to her next fastidious owner in 1965.  Her current owner who is even more fastidious than the first one is owner number 7. ANDIAMO has always proudly carried her original name from launch day until today.  The current custodian has cherished and lavished love and money on her since 1999. During their custodianship, the sellers have maintained her in impeccable condition and to ensure her longevity she has been professionally fiberglassed and a custom aft deck top was added.  She has proudly taken awards at a variety of classic boat shows and will continue to be show worthy for the next custodian.  ANDIAMO WILL BE ON DISPLAY AT THE BILLY CREEL MEMORIAL GULF COAST WOODEN & CLASSIC BOAT SHOW MAY17 AND 18TH. COME SEE THIS EXQUISTE EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN MARITIME HISTORY.

IT HAS BEEN REQUESTED THAT SHE CONTINUE HER REIGN AS  QUEEN OF THE FLEET WIH HER ORIGINAL LAUNCH NAME OF ANDIAMO.

ACCOMODATIONS:

Crossing the most comfortable aft deck of Andiamo, one goes down 4 carpeted steps into the main saloon of Andiamo. The very first impression is that of the large amount of natural light provided by once opening  windows with custom blinds that run along both the port and starboard side of the main saloon.  The entire forward end of the main saloon is graced with large windows with custom window coverings. Andiamo's main saloon is open all the way to the VIP cabin. giving the impression of a much larger yacht.  Immeditely to port and to aft is a convertible settee which is located below a large mahogany trimmed mirror.  In yachting we all know that the existence of large natural mirrors on a yacht, indicate just how stable the ride is. A teak coffee table and 2 additional teak chairs provide an easy space to gather and relax   Matthews Boat Company took great pains to insulate and to isolate as much engine noise as possible as the mains are located under the cabin sole. The teak cabin sole absolutely gleams in the natural light.  The pristine white overhead with its mahogany battens is so very eye pleasing. Dark rich mahogany trim off sets the white hidden storage lockers that line both sides of the main saloon. Proceeding forward and down three stairs one is in the galley/dinning area.  To port is located a U-Shaped settee with built in storage and lots of shelf space upon which to keep all sorts of objects d'art.  It is refreshing to see that her dining settee actually accommodates the number of owners and guest onboard.  Many new 'modern" yachts will sleep 6 and only "seat" 4 for enjoying meals and social time. The forward deckhead above the u-shaped settee is made of incredible hand crafted tongue and groove mahogany.  Truly eye appealing.  To starboard is a very well laid out sea going galley complete with a full sized  refrigerator with freezer, double stainless steel sinks and abundant storage.  Remember that Scott Matthews believed that yachts were meant to be on the move for long periods of time and consequently, one needed storage space, Again the teak and holly sole is impeccable. Even in the dining saloon/galley area one finds wall space for art work, another sign of a true yacht. ANDIAMO BOASTS NEARLY 6’3 head room.

ANDIAMO has a 2 cabin layout with privacy enjoyed by both cabins. Proceeding forward of the galley one finds a traditional V Berth  with storage, book shelves and hanging lockers  A very convenient traditional wash basin is located aft on the starboard side of this cabin.  A covered marine head is located mid cabin between the twin berths. Overhead the original wire enhanced deck hatch provides both great ventalation as well as wonderful light. This private guest suite also has is own climate controls as well as the entry into the chain locker which is hidden behind a lovely piece of art work.

Passing aft across the main saloon and down 3 carpeted steps one finds themselves in a very quiet and lovely owner's en-suite.  Windows with custom treatments stretch along both port and starboard side of this peaceful retreat.  Two berths with new mattresses are port and starboard seprated by a 4 drawer mahogany dresser with a hand crafted mahogany framed mirror located above the dresser.  Storage is plentiful in the owners en-suite. However, the pirate in the hanging locker is up for negotiation. The teak and holly sole is beautifully matched with the hand crafted jaw dropping mahogany tongue and groove overhead. Another large overhead hatch adds additonal natural light.  This suite also has great wall space for displaying one's favorite pieces of artwork,

To port one enters into the private head with large separate  shower stall that has a stainless steel shower pan.  There is  upgraded Electrosan toilet system that is well worth its initial expense.  The  tiled vanity with large medicine cabinet above, makes this area very user friendly. Again there is great natural light and gleaming teak and holly cabin sole.

ANDIAMO is truly a head turner in any port.  Her amazingly beautiful yet simple lines attract attention no matter where she roams.  She has participated in numerous boat shows and has placed very well against stiff competition.  If you are looking for a cookie cutter fade into the background type yacht. ANDIAMO is not your yacht.. She is a true classic that is capable of doing the Great Loop  again.  It is interesting to note that there are extensive records obtained from the Matthews boat owners club detailing her “birth”  Phenomenal archives.  Every communication between Mr. Sypher and the yard is in this ledger which will convey to her next custodian.

She is kept in a turn the key and go condition at all times.  Additional photos are available. Courtesy showings available. Easy to access from New Orleans airport.

The MATTHEWS BOAT COMPANY was the brain child of Scott Matthews in 1890 in Bascom, Ohio. He designed and built wooden yachts of distiction that were marketed under rhe name Lozier.  By 1906 he had built and launched a 74' double ender named ONWARD.  I love Scott's enthusim for yachting. He installed his family of 4 plus 2 guests on Onward and headed out down the Mississippi to do the GREAT LOOP and returned home to Ohio via the Erie Canal some 9000 miles later on her original shake down cruise.  That is what I call adventuresome!!!

By 1907 Scott had moved his company to  Port Clinton Ohio where they continued to build outstanding yachts wooden yachts a various sizes.  In 1965 the decision to move into the fiberglass yachting arena was made and due to the severe competition and the economy, The Matthews Boat Company closed their doors in the early 1970's.

ANDIAMO has a very strongly built hull.  She started life with a 7' x 12' solid white oak keel married to hand steamed white oak frames that are 11/4" x 1 7/8" spaced on 8" centers.  The frames are actually doubled from the main bulkhead aft to the transom to provide extra stiffnes

Her planking is Philippine mahogany that is 11/8" below the watre line and 1" abbove the water line. She was built with bronze fastners.  Her bronze rudders are very strong as well.

BUT, Andiamo has had a major upgrade while in the care of this current custodian.  She has had the advantage of having been C-FLEXED.  What excatly is C-FLEX one may ask?

The C-FLEX material system and related application technique can accommodate a wide range of bost building needs, from recreational to commercial fishing boats,

C-flex is an excellent solution for preserving the life and character of vintage wooden boats, because it can be attached on a wooden hull to create a stronger and more durable hull structure. The C-Flex is applied to the prepared hull with an Elastomeric Adhesive, which creates a strong but flexible interface between the wood and the exterior fiberglass. The hull is then laminated with additional layers of reinforcements to the desired strength level.

ANDIAMO  has also had a rather wonderful deck treatment as well using SPANTEX a very tough waterproofing system.

The combination of both  C-FLEX and SPANTEX has ensured her continued life on the water for decades to come,
